Horia Gârbea (Romania)

HORIA GÂRBEA (b. 1962, Bucharest) is a writer and translator. Over time, he has held numerous positions in cultural institutions (literary secretary at the “Toma Caragiu” Theater in Ploieşti; president of the Bucharest Writers’ Association, a branch of the Romanian Writers’ Union; president of the Bucharest Branch – Dramaturgy of the USR; president of the Bucharest Branch – Poetry of the USR; image director of the USR; elected member of the Board of Directors of the Writers’ Union; general secretary of the editorial board of the magazine Luceafărul de dimineață, vice-president of the Romanian Cultural Institute). He has published over 25 volumes of original literature and translations. He has been present in numerous anthologies of poetry and prose both in Romania and in other countries. His texts have been translated into several European and Asian languages. His twelve plays have been performed in Romania, as well as in England, France and Serbia. The novel The Storming of the Bastille was awarded three national prizes in 1998.

He received the Writers’ Union Award for dramaturgy in 1999 and the Romanian Academy Award for dramaturgy – 2001, the “Andrei Bantaș” Award, awarded by the Writers’ Union jury – 2012, for the volume “Shakespeare – Opere”, vol. IV, as a translator, together with George Volceanov and Violeta Popa.

Among the published volumes: Madame Bovary are the others (theatre, 1993); Test with witnesses (poetry, Cartea Românească and ASB, 1996); The Mysteries of Bucharest (short prose, Cartea Românească, 1997); The Fall of the Bastille (novel, Allfa, 1998); Who Killed Marx? (theatre, Vinea, 2001); Raising House Iguanas (poetry, Vinea, 2003); Partial Arts (criticism, Publishing House of the Romanian Literature Museum and ASB, 2005); Past Lives of Jockeys and Barmen (essays, Cartea Românească, 2008); Panther Up, on the Harpsichord (poetry, Tracus Arte, 2011), Three Pieces with Mysteries (Tracus Arte, 2016), 12 Lei Grass (NEUMA Publishing House, 2023). Participates in the retranslation of Shakespeare’s works, under the coordination of G. Volceanov (Tracus Arte Publishing House).
